Yes, but apparently you could take me places without walking. I could save on transportation.

It takes some getting used to. Not everyone likes shortcuts.

Well, I would know a thing or two about acquired tastes. Still, it would be worth a try.

I can't say I need the money, though. Or know the city well enough.

[prettypurpleparlor]

You could consider it a learning experience- taking the job as an opportunity to learn more about the strange and complex city where we live. It would be like getting paid in personal growth.

[As opposed to getting paid in... payment.]

I'm not running short on things to discover as it is, without even needing to leave home.

It is a terribly wide and fascinating world out here, isn't it.

[voidster]

I don't think I'll ever catch up.

[prettypurpleparlor]

Perhaps you don't have to, personally. The nice thing about it being a wider world is that there are more people to rely on, too.

You can do your part as best you can, and trust others to handle what you don't or can't get to.

Silly of you to assume I'm not learning it all because I want to.

That's an unfair question. Worse than asking someone what their favorite food is.

It could be worse- at least I didn't ask you to pick your favorite book.

Equally difficult.

But I suppose I can narrow it down enough to say space is fascinating.

[prettypurpleparlor]

Mm. In a way, I wonder if it's one of the few topics where humans and monsters have the exact same attitude- they're so used to the Surface and so unused to magic, and vice versa, that we have very different viewpoints... but the stars are a new frontier for everyone, still.

Indeed. Both our kinds are here, on this very small planet, when it's compared to the size of the universe.

It makes me wonder if there might be another species out there, one that's even stranger to humans and monsters than we are to each other.

Plenty of fiction has been written about that, actually.

[prettypurpleparlor]

Really? Since we arrived on the Surface, I mean?

[voidster]

No, I mean by humans, before we came up from the mountain. They're fascinated by 'aliens' from 'outer space'.

But you may have noticed that already, you've been free longer than I have.

Ah, yes, that makes more sense- I was thinking it was surprisingly quick for people to have started writing speculative fiction that included us. Still, I have seen some rather nice work in that genre, yes.

Give it a year and there may be books on 'alien monsters'.

Do you think you'd ever try your hand at writing fiction? Being an academic, I assume you've had to publish before.

[voidster]

I doubt it. Now that I've been to real libraries, it seems to me that everything interesting has already been written about.

[prettypurpleparlor]

I don't know- judging by the fanfiction that Dr. Alphys keeps sending me, people are always finding new ideas.

[She pauses briefly and looks at him with a puzzled frown.]

Speaking of which, I don't suppose you have any idea how I wound up on her fanfiction mailing list? It's not that I don't enjoy five-thousand-word persuasive essays on which characters should be kissing, I just didn't think we were that close.
