You could consider it a learning experience- taking the job as an opportunity to learn more about the strange and complex city where we live. It would be like getting paid in personal growth.
Mm. In a way, I wonder if it's one of the few topics where humans and monsters have the exact same attitude- they're so used to the Surface and so unused to magic, and vice versa, that we have very different viewpoints... but the stars are a new frontier for everyone, still.
